Urgent Federal Assistance Request for Legacy Infrastructure Challenges at the Former Plattsburgh Air Force Base (PAFB)

Overview
The Town of Plattsburgh is facing a critical infrastructure challenge due to the legacy of the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base (PAFB). Decommissioned in 1995, the base left behind aging infrastructure that now poses significant risks to our community. We urgently seek federal assistance to address these challenges, which are beyond our town’s capacity to manage alone.

Infrastructure Challenges
The former PAFB, once a key component of the Strategic Air Command, has been repurposed into a thriving economic hub. However, the aging infrastructure inherited from the base is deteriorating, resulting in severe issues, including failing stormwater systems and oversized roadways.

Request for Federal Support
To address these urgent challenges, we request:

  1. Engineering Support: Engage an Air Force engineering team or hire an expert firm for a comprehensive assessment.
  2. Infrastructure Funding: Secure funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill for necessary repairs and upgrades.
  3. Perpetual Care Program: Establish a program within the Defense Bill for ongoing maintenance of former military base infrastructure.
